The Fort of San Diego, a pentagonal-shaped stronghold commanding a fabulous view of Acapulco bay, is located very near what is now Acapulco’s core downtown area, Originally constructed between 1615 and 1617, the fort was heavily damaged by an earthquake in 1776. Reconstruction began in 1778 and continued over the following 5 years. The fort at that time was officially renamed San Carlos but continued to be and still is known by its original name of San Diego.

The thirteen exhibition rooms in the five bulwarks and interconnecting chambers hold specimens and artifacts from the region’s history, and cover such themes as:

• Acapulco’s pre-hispanic settlers and the rock paintings of Pie de la Cuesta
• The role of New Spain in the conquest of the Southern Oceans
• The spice, porcelain, silk and textile trades and the Nao de China
• Pirates, their booty and their fall
• The culture and influence of the Philippines
• Religious influences
• Mexico´s Independence

Open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 am to 6 pm.
The fort houses the Museo Histórico de Acapulco (Acapulco Historic Museum)
