Golfing in Ixtapa Mexico

Ixtapa has two excellent signature golf courses situated amidst lush lagoon settings, canals and palm trees. Both are extremely convenient to all of Ixtapa′s Hotel zone, its shopping area, marina and beaches.

Palma Real Golf and Tennis Club (Ixtapa Golf Club)

This challenging course is one of Mexico′s finest. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., the manicured rolling fairways run through a jungle and coconut plantation to the Pacific Ocean at Playa Palmar. This 6,898 yard, par 72 course is also a wildlife preserve with many species of birds and three large lakes populated by crocodiles.

Palma Real is a complete golf club including pro shop, driving range, putting green, locker facilities, club house, lighted tennis courts, paddleboard courts, swimming pool, restaurant and bar.

Hours: 7 am to 7 pm.

Challenges and Highlights of the Palma Real Golf Course:

Hole 6: Relatively short with 350 yards, a 200 yard tee-off is needed to clear the lagoon that connects with the Pacific in front of El Palmar Beach. The second shot to the green, generally with a short 9 iron has to hit right in order to avoid the beach and the ocean that are on the left. Hole 6 affords great views of the ocean and El Palmar Beach.

Hole 7: Spectacular from the tee to the green. Along this hole there is a lake. The green is surrounded by water on one side and sand on the other. Optimal precision required.

Hole 13: The green is in front of the lagoon and surrounded by sand traps. A deflected shot will land the ball in a lake inhabited by crocodiles.

Holes 14 and 15: Both holes are between a lake on one side and jungle on the other, necessitating a very precise drive.

This 6,793 yard,18 hole, par 72 course at Marina Ixtapa was designed by Robert Von Hagge in 1994 to test players at all levels of skill. The “Dunes-Style topography” combined with large sand traps and three kilometers of canals (water hazards come into play on 14 holes and require 12 bridtges) stretch over 55 hectares and require accurate shots to reach the expansive rolling greens.

Marina Ixtapa Golf Club offers a putting green and driving range, a pro shop, club house, shower and dressing room facilities, a caddy shack, snack bar and lounge, tennis courts, meeting rooms and an on course beverage cart.

Open seven days a week from 7:00 AM until 6:00 PM

CHALLENGES OF THE GOLF COURSE at MARINA IXTAPA

Hole 1:  Par 5. Has good birdie potential with a good tee shot. A bad shot to the right will make it hard for a double bogey.

Hole 4: Par 4. The drive needs to be exact.  There is water on the right side and sand traps on the left side.  The approach shot is a challenge to the greens.

Hole 9:  Par 4. A challenging hole with water on the left and sand traps on the right.  To hit the green in regulation requires an approach shot along the lake that is home to crocodiles.  (They do not eat golfers; they like to observe the game.  So, bring a camera!)

Hole 12:  Par 4. A long dog leg right.  Outside limits to the left and forest to the right, makes this hole difficult.  The approach shot to the green is severely surrounded by sand.

Hole 16:  Par 4. A long Par 4 that curves sharply to the left with water running from tee to green on the left side.  A very difficult hole with a handicap of 1.

Hole 17:  Par 3. 150 yards of water to the green completely surrounded by sand and moguls.

Hole 18:  Par 5.  Known as “the hole of the Devil” is 609 yards long.  It is one of the more difficult Par 5s that you will play.  It has water off the tee on the left and a series of sand traps on the right.  Your fairway shot has to be perfect to par this hole.  The green is surrounded by more water on the left side and sand on the right.  A par is truly something surprising here.
