Here’s a little paseo down memory lane for those who knew Zihuatanejo, Mexico, during the early 1970s. These are photos taken by a friend of ours while we were visiting Zihuatanejo over the Christmas – New Year holiday, December 1972 to January 1973.
Back then Zihua was a very small and lazy fishing village that stretched out only a few blocks back from the beach along Playa Municipal and Playa Madera. Playa la Ropa was still almost unpopulated, and the barren hills behind town, that are now filled with streets and housing, look so remote in these pictures.
The old wooden foot bridge over the Las Salinas estuary was a focal point of the town, at least for our group, since we were staying at Punta Arenas in La Noria, and had to cross it several times a day to get to town and to the beaches. How this town has grown!

I can’t believe I found this site dedicated to Zihuat 1973. I spent 10 days at Hotel Sotavento, December 16 – 28, 1973. I have a few photos, but none of the little airport where we flew in and out…. after waiting for chickens and dogs to move out of the way!
If you have any photos of that quaint landing strip, I’c love to have one.
