Traveling Mexico

One of Mexico’s major industries and sources of revenue is the travel and tourism industry. The country offers an incredible range of destinations, climates and geographic conditions. It is narrowly situated between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico / Caribbean shores, with a coastline measuring more than 10,000 kilometers (6,200+ miles). Its beaches, therefore, are numerous and varied. Some of the favorite beach destinations in Mexico in addition to Ixtapa Zihuatanejo include Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, Acapulco, Huatulco, Playa del Carmen and Mazatlan.

Inland, Mexico is a mosaic comprised of arid deserts, high mountain plateaus, jungly lowlands, craggy tree-lined peaks with dormant and active volcanoes, rich agricultural tracts and lush river valleys. Through its length run two major mountain chains, the Sierra Madre Oriental(1,350 km in length – 840 miles) and the Sierra Madre Occidental (5,000 km in length – 3,000+ miles). Mexico is home to some impressive terrain and natural features. Within its boundaries is found the Copper Canyon in Chihuahua — a system of six separate canyon of which some are deeper than the Grand Cayon in the United States — and Pico de Orizaba (Orizaba Volcano), North America’s third tallest volcano, measuring 5,636 meters (18,490 feet) in altitude, which lies at the convergence of the state of Puebla and Veracruz.

Mesoamerican cultures

Mesoamerican cultures

Mexico has a rich historical and architectural heritage. Settled in ancient times by the Olmecs, Teotihuacanos, Toltecs, Mayas and Aztecs, these tribes and civilizations left behind them massive and exquisitely-crafted and decorated pyramids and altars, ball courts and celestial observatories, carvings and sculptures that can be seen in the country’s many archaeological zones and museums. During colonial times the Spaniards, during their 3 centuries of occupation, constructed massive and exquisite churches and palaces, intricate gardens, aqueducts and monuments that still stand today in many modern Mexican cities.

With this variety of geography, history and culture, Mexico has much to offer the visitor. Whether your holidays are geared toward a laid-back, tranquil stay on remote beaches, an exciting active sports or eco-travel vacation centered around nature hikes, kayaking and surfing, a pampered all-inclusive-resort getaway with every imaginable amenity and comfort, or a cultural experience full of museums, art galleries and opportunities for learning, Mexico is certain to have something for your personal tastes.
