Beaches on horseback

A large local stable is located on Playa Linda, just north of Ixtapa next to the artisan’s market and wildlife preserve where a great number of crocodiles, iguanas, turtles and wild fowl can be seen. Available tours will lead you down the beach and up the river through coconut plantations, jungle and alongside wetlands populated with a variety of birds and wildlife. They even have ponies for the smaller children.

At Playa Larga (between Zihuatanejo and the airport) you will discover horses for rent and with plenty of beach space  to wander and explore on horseback. Watch for the local vaqueros (cowboys) to prance by doing tricks. Local horsemen here provide guided tours that can take to on a variety of adventures (see below).

Barra de Potosi, just past the airport also has horses for rent. Riding on the beach is pleasant but you will also want to hire a boat for a trip through Laguna de Potosi to see a variety of birds including great blue herons and pelicans. You can also sign up for some fantastic bird watching kayak trips in this area.
